CLUB NEWS

Fund-Raising

Congratulations to all those who took part in our Kick-a-thon, we had great fun and a total of €1200 was raised on the night. Although this money was originally intended to fund our trip to Limerick to see Grandmaster Cho and as that did not take place the money was used to purchase much needed equipment for the club. 12 Chest Protectors, 10 Junior Shields, Medicine Balls and Focus Pads.

We would like to thank Tony Kelly (BCK - Byrne, Curtin, Kelly Accountants) for his kind sponsorship of €500 which will be put towards the purchase of 10 Wavemasters. These Wavemasters will cost approx. €3,500 so further fund-raising will be required. Any parents out there with ideas for fund-raising or who would like to advertise in our Newsletter in return for sponsorship would be most welcome. Remember our newsletter will be published 3 monthly and will be also placed on our Website Taekwondublin.Com

Grading

Grading took place on 29th May 2002. Congratulations to all the students on a successful grading, especially Karl and Shane who both received their Black Belts, well done. For those of you who missed out in May the next grading will be on the 9th August. Good luck to all. We would like to wish Susan Fraser who is going for her Black Belt and Eugene Mc Quillan who is going for his 2nd Degree Black Belt the very best of luck.

What's New W.A.R. Defence (Women Against Rape)

This course has been designed by Eugene Mc Quillan and Susan Fraser to instruct women and teenagers how to defend themselves against a stronger and larger attacker in a real rape encounter. As described on TV3 and in the local newspapers W.A.R. Defence will give you the knowledge on how to defend yourself physically and psychologically. Courses run for 6 weeks and cost €90 of which €5 is donated to the Rape Crisis Centre and €5 to Women's Aid. The next course will start in September so if you are interested then please enrol ASAP to avoid disappointment. Eugene and Susan hope to take W.A.R. to our secondary schools (transition year, fifth and Sixth years) as they feel that it is very important that our teenage daughters be aware of the dangers and be able to protect themselves should the need arise. We would be very interested to hear how you as a parent of a teenage girl would feel about your school giving your daughter the opportunity to receive this training after/during school? Your comments would be most welcome and can be e-mailed to the following addresses or given to either Eugene or Susan on any of the class nights. MCQUILLANTKD@HOTMAIL.COM

JUNIORS AND SENIORS

TAE KWON DO Titbits

Did you know? Why and when we say, "Yes sir/ma'am"?

Why? We say, "Yes sir/ma'am" to acknowledge that we have heard our instructor, and we understand the command given. It also shows respect and politeness. So next time in class remember to give a loud "Yes sir/ma'am".

When: When your instructor asks you a question you should finish your response with "Yes sir/ma'am".

When your instructor is talking to you, or to the class in general you should respond with "Yes sir/ma'am" to show that you understand what has been said to you.

When you instructor gives you a new command you should respond with "Yes sir/ma'am"

Tae Kwon Do is about training both MIND and body. It is about self-discipline.

Do you know? Why we Bow?

The act of bowing is a traditional oriental gesture displaying courtesy and respect to others. We bow to each other to show respect to our fellow students and we bow to our instructors to show them that we understand and appreciate the lessons they are teaching us.

------------------------------------

How should we begin and end each class?

Beginning a class:

A senior student will issue the following commands:

"Charyot" (calling everyone to attention), "Kyung Nae" (calling everyone to salute), "Baro" (return to attention stance) and finally, "Kyung Nae" (salute you instructor by bowing)

Ending a class:

A senior student will issue the following commands:

"Charyot" (calling everyone to attention) "Kyung Nae" (calling everyone to salute) "Baro" (return to attention stance) "Kyung Nae" (salute your instructor by bowing)

Everyone must then face the senior student and the second senior student will command

"Kyung Nae" (bow to the senior student)

The senior student will respond

`"Hae Chae" (Dismiss - bow to the senior student)
